VCE Physical Education
Last Thursday the Year 12 VCE Physical Education students conducted an activity analysis of basketball as part of their Unit 4 area of study. This area of study looks at training to improve performance and the students conducted this activity analysis to identify the key physiological requirements of basketball
The activity analysis was used to identify the key skill frequencies, movement patterns, heart rates and work to rest ratios of the game of basketball.
Once this data has been collected and analysed the students can then use the information to design an appropriate and effective training program specific to the physiological requirements of basketball.
To accurately conduct this activity analysis METS Performance Consulting were on site and the students actively participated in a game of basketball. The students all wore GPS vests and heart rate monitors which collected their performance metrics: distance, top speed, number of sprints, work:rest ratio and distance/min.
One student wore a portable V02max mask, which collected their real-time metabolic date: ventilation, heart rate, tidal volume, respiratory rate and V02. We had a drone hovering above the court collecting video footage, which was used to determine movement patterns, skill frequencies and heat map player tracking.
It was a great experience where the students were able to see first hand how data is collected and link the practical aspect of participation to the academic requirements of VCE. In the week prior, students conducted their own activity analysis of a game of badminton, where they worked together to analyse the physiological requirements of a badminton player.
