Outdoor Education

Time in Nature

Time spent in the bush is an important complement to classroom-based education. Our outdoor education program engages students in a wide variety of camping and hiking trips to an array of diverse environments. This enables our students to develop the wide range of skills necessary for safe, minimal-impact travel in the bush, as well as fostering a deep love and appreciation for the amazing natural places that we visit.

The practical and physical skills acquired when camping in the bush or by the beach are invaluable. Time spent with peers in an unfamiliar environment nurtures resilience, independence, self-sufficiency, understanding of personal differences, and the value of trusting relationships. Such qualities are often developed naturally in the bush.

Building Independence

From Class 3 students spend time with their teachers and peers on camp. These outdoor camping experiences grow progressively longer as the students move up through the school, with different age-appropriate responsibilities required over the years. Families often comment on the positive changes they see when students return from these expeditions. By Year 9, outdoor education becomes a fully-fledged subject for the year, with students spending over 30 days away from school across six camps.

Throughout our outdoor education program students grow in their capabilities and gain a strong sense of themselves and their community. We aim to foster and extend their love and appreciation for the natural environments we visit and hope to ignite a passion for the conservation and preservation of all natural environments, and the care of our planet as a whole.
